Birth of a Movement (BOAM), brings to life a pivotal chapter of the Civil Rights movement, when Black leaders fought to ban D. W. Griffith’s notoriously racist film, The Birth of a Nation. setting the stage for the modern civil rights movement. Narrated by Danny Glover, featuring Spike Lee, Reginald Hudlin, DJ Spooky, outstanding historians and scholars.

Nominated for an Outstanding Historic Documentary Emmy and an NAACP Image Award, the BOAM aired on PBS’ Independent Lens to outstanding ratings and multiple broadcasts across the country. Funded by the NEH, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Ford Foundation, BOAM, is a co-production of Northern Light Productions, WNET and Independent Lens.

Curriculum

A culturally relevant high school social studies curriculum designed around BOAM is available on this website thanks to the work of the Boston Public Schools Office of Opportunity Gaps. The curriculum is available for teachers to use and test in their classrooms. Input from teachers is welcome and will be used to revise the curriculum.
