If you have been moved by the story of the Central Park Five, now appropriately renamed “The Exonerated Five”, and you are disturbed by the overt racism that has seen a revival in this country led by the comments and policies out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, then come watch the Emmy and Image Award nominated-film Birth of a Movement, an eye opening look at how Hollywood embedded racist stereotypes in the American psyche through the 1915 propagandistic film, Birth of a Nation – Hollywood’s first blockbuster seen by a quarter of Americans at the time. The docu-film gives the history behind the devaluing of Black lives through print images and cinema post slavery and Reconstruction. Birth of a Nation perpetuated the fear of Black men attacking white women, corrupting and demeaning our

system of government and leading to a loss of culture, values and order. An African proverb reminds us, “If you know the beginning well, the end won’t trouble you.” In this case, we’re hoping the beginning inspires you. In addition, learn about a culturally relevant high school studies curriculum created by the Boston Public Schools, in part based on this docu-film, that you can take back and use in your schools. It is a groundbreaking opportunity to open minds and hearts and make change!
